Kids

  • Kids follow your lead. Stay calm, explain simply, and give them a job, like flashlight captain.
  • Practice lights-out nights so outages feel familiar.
  • Pack a comfort item, a card game and a favorite snack in their go-bag.
  • Put a card in each child's bag with their name, your phone number and a backup contact.
  • Teach older kids how to call 911 and your family meeting spots.

Babies & toddlers

  • Ready-to-feed liquid formula needs no water or bottles to be sterilized.
  • Two weeks of diapers and wipes.
  • A baby carrier frees your hands during an evacuation.
Remember
No honey for babies under 1 year old.

Older adults & medical needs

  • Keep at least a week of extra prescriptions if your pharmacy and insurance allow it.
  • Keep a written list of medications, doses, doctors and allergies.
  • Plan backup power for oxygen, CPAP or other medical devices, and tell your power company.
  • Mobility aids, spare glasses and hearing aid batteries.
  • Set up a daily check-in with someone during emergencies.

Pets

  • Two weeks of food and about 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day.
  • Leash, carrier, litter and bags.
  • Vaccination records and a photo of you with your pet, in case you're separated.
  • Find pet-friendly shelters and hotels on your evacuation route ahead of time.
