Storing fuel safely

FuelHow long it storesNotes
PropaneDoesn't go badInspect tanks for rust. Store outdoors, upright, in shade.
GasolineA few months; longer with stabilizerAdd stabilizer when you fill. Rotate into your car.
KeroseneYears if sealed and cleanFor kerosene heaters and lamps. Use a CO detector.
Butane canistersYearsEasy for tabletop stoves. Keep out of heat.
FirewoodYears if kept drySeason at least 6 months. Cover the top, not the sides.
Check local rules
Many places limit how much fuel you can store at home. Keep fuel outside the house, away from heat and kids, in approved containers.

Sizing a solar generator

  1. List what you need to run: phones, lights, a radio, a fridge, a CPAP, a fan.
  2. Find each one's watts (on the label) and how many hours a day you'll run it.
  3. Multiply watts × hours for each, then add them up. That's your watt-hours per day.
  4. Pick a battery bigger than that number, and solar panels that can refill it on a cloudy-ish day.
Real-world numbers
Phones and LED lights use very little. A full-size fridge can use 1,000 to 2,000 watt-hours a day. A CPAP often uses 300 to 600 a night. Check your own devices.

Generator safety

Outside only
Run generators outdoors, 20 feet or more from doors and windows. Never in a garage, even with the door open. Use a transfer switch, never backfeed through an outlet.
