When the toilet won't flush
- Turn off the water to the toilet if the water system may be contaminated.
- Line the bowl, or a 5-gallon bucket, with two heavy trash bags.
- After each use, add a scoop of kitty litter, sawdust or a little bleach to cut odor.
- Tie the bag closed when it's about half full.
- Store bags outside in a lidded trash can until pickup resumes.
If you still have water but no pressure, you can flush by pouring a bucket of water quickly into the bowl. Use bathtub or non-drinking water for this.
Staying clean with little water
- Set up a handwashing station: a jug with a spout, soap, and a bucket underneath.
- Hand sanitizer after the bathroom and before eating.
- Wipes for quick sponge baths.
- Paper plates and plastic utensils mean no dishwater.
Cleaning with bleach
Mix 1 cup of unscented bleach in 5 gallons of water to clean surfaces after a flood or sewage backup. Wear gloves, open windows, and never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.
