Build a Faraday can for EMP protection

A metal can that shields spare electronics from an EMP or a severe solar storm.

20 minutes About $40

What you'll need

  1. 1

    Line it

Line the inside completely with cardboard so nothing inside touches the metal.

  2. 2

    Wrap your electronics

Put each device in plastic or a box. Take batteries out.

  3. 3

    Close it tight

Put the lid on and run aluminum tape around the seam.

  4. 4

    Test it

Put a radio inside tuned to a strong station. If the sound cuts out when you close it, the shielding is working.

Tips that make it easier
  • Store a cheap radio, two-way radios, a spare phone with offline maps, flash drives with documents, and a small solar charger.
Mistakes to avoid
  • Letting devices touch the bare metal.
  • Opening it all the time. Keep a separate set for daily use.
