Make a bucket toilet when the toilet won't flush

When water or sewer service is out, this keeps your home clean and your family healthy. Set one up before you need it.

10 minutes About $30

What you'll need

  1. 1

    Line it

Put two heavy trash bags inside the bucket, folded over the rim.

  2. 2

    Snap on the seat

The seat holds the bags in place.

  3. 3

    Cover after every use

Add a scoop of litter, sawdust or peat. It controls smell and liquid.

  4. 4

    Separate urine if you can

Peeing in a different container makes the bucket last much longer and smell far less.

  5. 5

    Tie off and store

When the bag is a third full, tie it tight and put it in a lidded trash can outside, away from water sources, until pickup or local guidance says how to dispose of it.

  6. 6

    Wash hands every time

Keep sanitizer right next to the bucket.

Tips that make it easier
  • If water is out but the sewer works, you can flush by pouring a bucket of water quickly into the bowl.
  • Practice once on a camping trip so it's not a shock.
Mistakes to avoid
  • Overfilling bags so they split.
  • Burying waste near wells, creeks or gardens.
