Rotate your pantry (first in, first out)

A stockpile only works if it's good when you need it. Rotation means you eat the oldest first and replace it, so nothing goes to waste.

What you'll need

  1. 1

    Date everything

Write the month and year big on every can and box as you put it away.

  2. 2

    New goes in back

Push older items forward and put new ones behind them. Can racks do this for you.

  3. 3

    Shop from your stockpile

Cook from your storage every week, then add what you used to your shopping list.

  4. 4

    Check monthly

Pull anything getting close to its date and plan meals around it.

  5. 5

    Write it down

Use the free pantry inventory sheet so you know what you have without digging.

Tips that make it easier
  • Most canned food stays safe long past its date if the can isn't dented, rusted or bulging. The date is about best quality.
  • Donate or swap extras before they expire.
Mistakes to avoid
  • Storing food your family won't eat.
  • Burying old stock behind new stock.
