Everything you need to leave home in minutes and get by for 72 hours.

2–3 hours $200 budget to $650+

What you'll need

  1. 1

    Line the bag

Put a contractor bag inside as a waterproof liner.

  2. 2

    Water first

A hard bottle, a collapsible bottle, a filter and tablets.

  3. 3

    Then the rest

Food, shelter, fire, light, first aid, documents and cash, in that order.

  4. 4

Heavy stuff close to your back

Pack heavy items in the middle against your back, light items on the outside.

  5. 5

    Try it

Wear it for a 30-minute walk. Take out anything you didn't miss.

  6. 6

    Check it twice a year

Swap food, medicine and clothes for the season.

Tips that make it easier
  • Keep a pair of broken-in shoes and socks with the bag.
Mistakes to avoid
  • Packing a bag too heavy to carry. Aim for under 20% of your body weight.
