Prepping with a baby: what to do when diapers, wipes or formula run low

A lot of you asked about prepping with little ones, and it's a big one. Babies go through supplies fast, and you can't make a baby wait.

The ideas that surprise people

  • Flour sack towels are diapers. Fold one, put a waterproof cover over it, and you've got a diaper that dries fast on a line. They're cheap, and they double as wipes and burp cloths.
  • A plunger and a bucket are a washing machine. A plunger-style hand washer gets diapers clean with a few gallons of water.
  • The sun is a stain remover. Hang cloth diapers in the sun and the stains fade.
  • A peri bottle replaces wipes. A few ounces of water rinses a bottom clean.
  • Cups are easier to clean than bottles. When clean water is short, cup feeding is used by aid groups worldwide. Ask your pediatrician to show you how.

The one rule

Never water down formula or make it at home. Stock ready-to-feed formula, which needs no water, and if you run low, call your pediatrician, WIC or a hospital.
